Troubleshooting
Symptoms
●Receiving a “Page Cannot Be Displayed” error message when navigating to online library databases or electronic journals.
●The connection fails or times out specifically when connected to certain external networks (e.g., workplace, military base, or government facilities).
Possible Causes
●Columbia College Online Library resources are routed through a campus proxy server gateway for authentication.
●External workplace or military networks often utilize restrictive proxy servers and content filters designed to block secondary outbound proxy server connections.
●Database licensing restrictions prohibiting off-campus access for specific account types (such as Alumni).
Affected Systems / Services
●Columbia College Online Library Resources & Research Databases
●Stafford Library EZproxy Gateway
Resolution
How to Fix
1 Switch to an Unrestricted Network
If you are connected to a secured employer, government, or military network with strict firewall filters, switch to an alternative internet connection.
●Disconnect from your employer/work VPN or restricted Wi-Fi network.
●Connect to a standard home internet connection, personal mobile hotspot, or public network that does not filter proxy traffic.
●Reload the Online Library Resource page to verify access.
2 Contact the Columbia College Library
If changing networks does not resolve the issue or if you are required to remain on your current network, contact the Library staff directly for assistance.
●Call the Library directly at (800) 231-2391 ext. 7381.
●Provide the name of the specific database or resource you are attempting to reach along with any exact error text.
Note for Alumni Users
Due to vendor licensing contracts, Alumni cannot access Library databases from off-campus. However, alumni may access these databases directly at the Main Campus Library or Main Campus computer lab. Alumni located outside the Columbia area may use computer labs at their local Columbia College campus location to access the College Library system.
