Cougar Mail - Using Microsoft Authenticator for Cougar Mail 2FA

Overview

Setting up Two-Factor Authentication Using the Microsoft Authenticator App (Staff & Faculty)

As a staff or faculty member you may already utilize the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device for myPortal/Microsoft related school sign in.

Since we will also be implementing 2-Factor Authentication in Google for Cougar Mail accounts for college security and safety, you can also set up the Google sign in to the Microsoft Authenticator App. This allows for all of your MFA information to be in one application.

How to:

You will need both a mobile device and a secondary device such as a computer so you can scan the QR code onto your Microsoft Authenticator.

  1. On your computer (secondary device) you will need to navigate to Gmail.com or the Gmail app
     
  2. Log in to your Cougar Mail Account
     
  3. Select the Profile Icon in the top right
     
  4. Select Manage Your Google Account

  5. Select the Security tab

  6. Select 2-Step Verification

  7. Select Authenticator

  8. Select + Set Up Authenticator

Now, on your mobile device open the Microsoft Authenticator App

Then select the + (plus sign) to scan the QR code from your computer screen.

Once the QR code is scanned you will be able to select the Google Account listed in your Microsoft Authenticator to type in the code when you go to 2FA into your Cougar Mail account in the future.

Of course, as usual we recommend you set up more than one method because if one does not work or Google runs into any issues for one of the options, having a back up will make sure you are never locked out of your Cougar Mail account.
