Microsoft Authenticator Mobile App - Enabling Password Less Sign In

If you receive the error message:
"Authentication method 'MultiFactor, PasswordlessPhoneSignIn' by which the user authenticated with the service doesn't match requested authentication method 'Password, ProtectedTransport'. Contact the Colleague - Self-Service - PROD - Student Self Service application owner."

Here are the steps to take to fix this issue.

How to:

Some vendors don’t allow passwordless sign-in, which can cause errors when signing into their services (see Fig 1).

The Microsoft Authenticator app has a built-in way to enable password less sign-in (see Fig 2).

Steps to Enable Password-less Sign-In:

  1. Go to the app or site you’re trying to sign into.

    • Enter your username and click “Next”.
  2. Enter your password.

    • If you don’t see a password prompt, click “Other Ways to Sign In”.
  3. Alternative Sign-In Options:

    • You may see a blue link that says “Use your face, fingerprint, PIN, or security key instead”. This link serves the same purpose as the “Other Ways to Sign In” option.
  4. Troubleshooting:

    • If the system tries to log you in directly without any of these options, you may need to clear your browser cache.
    • Alternatively, try using an incognito window to sign in.
