How to - Register and Configure a Security Key for Microsoft 365

Summary

Steps for End User to be able set up FIDO Key for MFA

Body

Overview

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) requires users to sign in using multiple verification methods beyond just a password, making account access more secure and protecting against unauthorized access. This guide walks you through registering a hardware FIDO2 security key as a sign-in method on your Microsoft account.

Applies to: Faculty Staff Students
Before You Begin (Prerequisites)
  • You will need a FIDO2 USB security key available to insert into your computer.
  • Because key registration requires physical interaction and setting a PIN, users must complete the setup process themselves.
  • If you have never set up MFA before and need to configure a key, contact the Solutions Center at 573-875-4357 to receive a temporary access pass.

Step-by-Step Guide

●Click Add sign-in method.

●Select Security key from the method dropdown menu.

2 Select USB Device and Connect Your Key

Specify the type of security key you are setting up and connect it to your computer.

●Select the USB device option and click Next.

●Plug your FIDO2 key into an available USB port on your computer if you have not already done so.

●In Google Chrome, choose External security key or built-in sensor when prompted (prompts may vary slightly depending on your browser).

3 Create a Security PIN and Tap the Key

Set up the secure PIN code for your physical key and confirm the registration with a physical touch.

●Enter and confirm a unique PIN for your key.

●Touch or tap the flashing logo/sensor button on the security key once when prompted (do not hold it down).

●Assign a recognizable name to the key so you can identify it in your account settings later.

4 Test Your New Security Key

After completing setup, verify that your FIDO2 key works properly for signing in.

●Open a new Incognito (Chrome) or InPrivate (Edge) browser window.

●Navigate to MyPortal and sign in using your security key, entering your PIN and tapping the key when prompted.

●Confirm you are successfully authenticated into your portal.

Important: Do Not Forget Your Security Key PIN

Be sure to remember your security key PIN. If this PIN is forgotten, the FIDO2 key cannot be recovered and will need to be completely reset and reconfigured from scratch.
