Overview

Our partners at INFOSEC have provided a tool to report phishing emails in the Outlook desktop application called PhishNotify. PhishNotify is a tool to report suspicious emails received. Right now, it is only supported in Outlook on your workstation. When a suspicious email is identified as phishing email or potentially malicious, click the ”Report Phishing” (Fish Icon) to submit the email to the Columbia College Cougar Security team for review. This will allow you to safely send the email without the inherent risks of forwarding or interacting with these messages.

This tool will identify phishing simulation emails sent from the Cougar Security team, and should be used consistently for any questionable email you receive. This document contains steps to report a phishing email to Columbia Colleges Cougar Security team and troubleshoot issues with the PhishNotify button.

Reporting Emails from the Outlook Desktop Application

  1. To submit an email to the Columbia College Cougar Security team as a potential phishing message: Click the “Report Phishing” button from the Outlook ribbon.

  2. A dialog box will appear as a pop-up confirming if the email was or was not a phishing simulation email.

Once the email has been reported, a member of the Columbia College Cougar Security Team will reply regarding the status of the reported email.

If you are experiencing issues with using the Report Phishing - PhishNotify button, please submit a ticket in TDX or contact the Solutions Center by phone at (573) 875-4357 (HELP) or (800) 231-2391, ext. 4357.

PhishNotify Button is Missing or Disabled COM add -in

PhishNotify is an Outlook COM add-in and is a program which runs within Outlook. Occasionally, the button may appear to be missing in Outlook.

Since add-ins are separate programs, sporadically, PhishNotify can encounter problems which slows down Outlook. These problems could be due to latency of events such as switching between Outlook folders, arrival of new emails, opening calendar items, etc.  When such issues arise, Outlook may decide to disable an add-in, because it detects a delay while starting or closing Outlook.

  1. Go to your Outlook and then click File in the upper left side of the menu.
  2. Scroll down and you will see Slow and Disabled COM Add-ins. Click it and and a widow will pop up.
  3. You should then see Infose IQ PhishNotify listed. ClickAlways enable this add-in “(it may be marked in red).
  4. Next, restart Oulook.
  5. You should now see the PhishNotify Report Phishing button.

Note: If the PhishNotify button is still missing and is not located in the Slow and Disabled COM Add-ins please submit a ticket in TDX stating you tried the above steps or contact the Solutions Center by phone at (573) 875-4357 (HELP) or (800) 231-2391, ext. 4357.
